Pension FAQ
Short answers to the questions asked most often about the old-age pension, under Legea nr. 156/1998 and the instruments in force for 2026.
When can I retire?
Men at 63 years. For women, the standard age is currently 62 years, through a transition still under way. See the pension age page for details.
How much insured service do I need?
A minimum service of 15 years is required to receive any pension at all on this route. For the ordinary pension, alongside the standard age, the law requires the full service — 34 years for men, 34 years for women.
How is the pension amount calculated?
Your own average monthly insured income across your whole career is multiplied by an accrual percentage for each year of service — 1,2 % up to the required service, then 2 % for each additional year. Details on the how the pension is calculated page.
Is there a maximum pension?
No provision was found setting a maximum pension amount in Legea nr. 156/1998 — not on the average insured income, and not directly on the pension amount.
Can I retire early?
We found no route, in the articles reviewed, to an early pension at a reduced age in the law. The law does provide a separate early pension conditioned solely on insured service, a different mechanism.
